There are 37 species of freshwater catfish that inhabit North American waters. Belonging to the family of fish known as Ictaluridae, these fish are commercially important and many farms specialize in raising them. Catfish from clear waters are surprisingly delicious, considering their rather unappealing appearance.
The Channel Catfish has a maximum weight of 13.6 kg (30 pounds), but the average is less than 2.3 kg (5 pounds). There is a sharp spine on each pectoral fin and on the dorsal fin, and eight barbels located around the mouth which help them to locate their food. They are bottom-feeders, thriving on both live and dead foods.
Channel Catfish prefer lazy streams or lakes and ponds. They are most active at night or on cloudy days. This fish is rated as a top sport fish because of the vigorous fight it gives when hooked by a fisherman.
